Your Laos Biking Adventure kicks off today with an exciting ride from Vientiane to Nam Ngum Lake. After breakfast, our experienced cycling tour guide and support driver will meet you at your hotel for a comprehensive tour briefing and bike fitting session. Once you’re set, we begin cycling out of Vientiane, quickly trading the city’s buzz for peaceful rural landscapes. The route takes us through lush rice paddies, vibrant agricultural villages, and scenic countryside roads, offering an authentic glimpse into Laos’ rural life. As we approach Ang Nam Ngum reservoir, enjoy two short but scenic climbs that reward you with beautiful panoramic views over the tranquil lake. We finish the day at this peaceful spot, where you can relax and soak in the natural beauty after your first day on the saddle.
Today’s leg takes you from the serene shores of Nam Ngum Lake to the picturesque riverside town of Vang Vieng. We start early, cycling along mostly flat terrain that winds through peaceful rural communities and lush farmlands. Late in the morning, we reach the traditional fishing village of Tha Heua, known for its roadside stalls offering a variety of dried and salted fish, a perfect place to pause and sample some authentic Laotian flavors during our lunch break. After a well-earned rest, we continue our ride toward Vang Vieng, arriving by early afternoon. Set against a stunning backdrop of limestone karsts and the Nam Song River, this vibrant town is a haven for outdoor lovers and offers a perfect setting to unwind after another memorable day on the bike.
After several days of rewarding cycling, today is a well-deserved rest day in Vang Vieng, a scenic riverside town nestled among dramatic limestone karsts. Once a hidden gem, Vang Vieng is now a favorite spot for adventure travelers and backpackers, offering a laid-back atmosphere with a great selection of cafés, restaurants, and guesthouses. Spend the day at your leisure, float down the Nam Song River in an inner tube, take a refreshing swim, or explore the area’s mystical caves and blue lagoons. As the sun sets, unwind with a cold Beer Lao and enjoy the golden light dancing over the karst mountains and river—a perfect pause on your cycling tour in Laos before the journey continues.
Today’s ride offers both a challenge and a reward as your Laos Biking Adventure continues from Vang Vieng to Kasi. After breakfast, we begin cycling along a scenic route flanked by towering limestone hills and lush valleys. The journey starts gently, giving you time to warm up before reaching a more demanding 8-kilometer uphill climb around the 28km mark. This invigorating ascent is followed by a long, gradual descent that winds through peaceful countryside and offers stunning views of rural central Laos. We arrive in Kasi, a quiet mountain town, by late afternoon where we check in for an overnight stay and reflect on the day’s rewarding ride.
Today marks one of the most exhilarating and demanding stages as we cycle from Kasi to Kiu Kachan through some of the country’s most dramatic mountain landscapes. The day begins with a peaceful 10-kilometer ride, where the fragrant scent of jasmine and lotus blossoms drifts through the fresh mountain air, carried from the surrounding tropical jungle. Then, prepare for a rewarding challenge: a 38-kilometer ascent to the mountain pass at Nung Phum, where we pause to enjoy a well-earned local lunch. The afternoon takes us on a further 50 kilometers of rolling terrain, weaving through breathtaking vistas of craggy limestone peaks, including some of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia. We end the day in the mountain village of Kiu Kachan, where you’ll have a chance to rest and recharge after this unforgettable highland ride.
Today’s ride takes you from the remote highlands to one of the true highlights, the enchanting city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its rich culture and timeless charm. The day begins with an exhilarating 22-kilometer downhill ride, offering sweeping views of misty mountains and verdant valleys. This is followed by a challenging 15-kilometer climb, rewarding you with a sense of accomplishment and stunning scenery along the way. As we ride, we pass through several traditional Hmong villages, each with its own unique culture, wooden stilt houses, and warm hospitality. By late afternoon, we descend into the magical city of Luang Prabang, where French colonial architecture blends with ancient temples, marking a beautiful transition from wild nature to historical elegance.
Your final day of the Laos Biking Adventure is dedicated to exploring the rich cultural heritage of Luang Prabang, one of Southeast Asia’s most captivating cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After breakfast, we set off on a guided walking tour, beginning at the vibrant local morning market, where residents shop for fresh produce and traditional ingredients. Next, we visit the Royal Palace Museum (National Museum), followed by Wat Mai and the stunning Wat Xieng Thong, known for its intricate carvings and significance in Lao royal history.
We pause for a delicious local lunch, then continue to Wat Visoun, one of the oldest temples in Luang Prabang, built in the 16th century. In the afternoon, we explore the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center, offering insights into the diverse ethnic groups that make up Laos’ cultural fabric. As the day winds down, we climb Mount Phousi to enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the Mekong River and the town’s golden rooftops. We conclude the day and the journey with a stroll through the lively Luang Prabang Night Market, a perfect place to pick up handmade crafts and local souvenirs to remember your adventure.
Your Laos Biking Tour will be led by one of our experienced local cycling guides. For groups with fewer than 5 participants, we will have one English-speaking cycling guide and a driver. For larger groups (6 or more), we’ll provide a Cycling Tour Leader, an additional English-speaking guide, and extra drivers and assistants.
Our guides are passionate about Cambodia’s culture, history, and religion, providing insightful commentary throughout your journey. Whether exploring remote villages or ancient temples, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the rich history of Southeast Asia firsthand.
We provide top-quality hybrid or mountain bikes for all our cyclists. If you have your own bike, we recommend ensuring it’s fully serviced before the tour. Our guides carry a reliable toolkit and are skilled in basic bike repairs during the trip. However, some advanced repairs may require specialized tools.
A backup vehicle will accompany the group at all times, providing security and comfort. This vehicle will carry your luggage and offer a ride if you need assistance during the ride. It will stop roughly every 15 kilometers, ensuring that you can rest, hydrate, and enjoy the scenery.
Your safety is our top priority. Wearing a helmet is mandatory on all rides. If you choose not to wear a helmet, you won’t be permitted to cycle. All of our guides are trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but we encourage all cyclists to be mindful of their own safety during the ride.
Our Laos Biking Adventure features diverse terrain, including flat and rolling hills on a mix of sealed and dirt roads. Expect scenic, rural landscapes and quiet back roads with minimal traffic. Frequent stops will allow for rest, snacks, and photos along the way.
The tour is designed to accommodate cyclists of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned riders. It’s not a race—everyone is encouraged to cycle at their own pace. While the route is physically demanding, you can always hop into the support vehicle if you need a break. We want everyone to enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
Since the tour involves moderate physical exertion, it’s important that you’re in good physical health. Please inform your guide of any pre-existing medical conditions before the trip, and if you feel unwell at any point, let the guide know immediately. Your safety and well-being are our priority.
We take hydration seriously. During the tour, we’ll provide cold water, locally sourced fruit, and soft drinks to keep you energized. Meals are not inclusive of soft drinks or alcoholic beverages, though beer is widely available at many stops throughout the journey. Beer is not included in the tour price.
Our Laos Biking Adventure includes most major expenses. We recommend bringing about US$30 for incidentals like souvenirs, additional drinks, or optional activities. Any extra activities or food outside the itinerary will be at your own cost.
