Money & Currency Tips for Cambodia and Laos

Cambodia:

In Cambodia, US dollars and Thai baht are commonly accepted, especially in larger cities and tourist areas. However, in smaller towns and rural villages, the Cambodian riel is often preferred. Most ATMs in Cambodia dispense US dollars, and your guides will point out the nearest machines during your tour. Be sure to spend all your riel before departing, as they cannot be exchanged outside of Cambodia.

Laos:

The official currency of Laos is the Lao kip, though US dollars and Thai baht are widely accepted in larger towns and cities. In smaller villages, kip is the primary currency used. While ATMs are available in some areas, they are not as widespread or reliable as in Cambodia. Be sure to spend or exchange all your kip before leaving, as it cannot be exchanged outside of Laos.

Solo Travelers Welcome on Our Cycling Tours

We warmly welcome solo travelers alongside couples and friends on our Bike Tours Cambodia & Laos. Our tour prices are based on twin-share accommodation, meaning if you sign up as a solo traveler, you will be paired with another participant of the same gender in your group.

However, if you prefer private accommodation, you can opt for a single room at an additional cost, available on most of our tours.

Passport & Visa Information for Cambodia and Laos

Cambodia:

All visitors to Cambodia must hold a valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond the date of their planned departure from the country.

For most nationalities, you can obtain a visa on arrival at Phnom Penh and Siem Reap international airports, as well as other major entry points. The visa fee is USD $30 per person, and you will need to bring 1 passport-sized photo. For a more streamlined process, you can apply for an e-visa in advance via www.evisa.gov.kh.

Laos:

A visa is required for all nationalities entering Laos. You have two options for obtaining a single-entry tourist visa (valid for up to 30 days):

1/ E-Visa (recommended for quicker processing)

2/ Visa on Arrival

We recommend applying for an E-Visa in advance, which can be done online through the official Lao government website. If you opt for a Visa on Arrival, please ensure you have the following documents: 2 passport-sized photos, Exact payment for the visa fee in USD

Both options are available at all major international airports and border crossings. However, some remote border posts may not accept E-Visas or Visa on Arrival. If your tour involves crossing into Laos from Vietnam or another less common border, we’ll inform you ahead of time if a visa through a Laotian embassy is required.

Travel Insurance for Cycling Tours in Cambodia & Laos

Travel insurance is mandatory for all participants joining our Bike Tours Cambodia & Laos. Your insurance policy must provide comprehensive coverage for the full duration of your trip, including:

  • Personal injury and medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation, including helicopter or air rescue
  • Repatriation in case of serious illness or injury
  • Trip cancellation or curtailment
  • Loss or theft of luggage, cycling gear, or personal items

In the event of a claim, participants are responsible for contacting their insurance providers directly. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance at the time of booking to ensure you are covered in case of unexpected cancellations or changes before the tour begins.

Climate & Weather in Cambodia and Laos

Understanding the climate is essential when planning your cycling tour in Cambodia and Laos. Both countries offer year-round travel opportunities, with distinct seasonal variations that can enhance your experience depending on when you visit.

Cambodia Climate Overview

Cambodia has a tropical climate with two main seasons: dry and wet.

  • November to January is the best time to cycle in Cambodia, with cooler temperatures (25–26°C), low humidity, and plenty of sunshine. This period marks the peak of the dry season, offering ideal weather conditions for outdoor activities.

  • June to October is the rainy season, but rain usually falls in the late afternoon or evening and rarely disrupts cycling. The landscape becomes beautifully lush, with vibrant green rice paddies and countryside views, making it a scenic time to ride.

Laos Climate Overview

Laos also experiences a tropical climate with three distinct seasons:

  • Hot & dry season (March to June): Temperatures range from 27°C to 35°C, with warm evenings around 20°C
