Day 6: Phnom Penh City Tour (Royal Palace & Khmer Rouge History)

Today is dedicated to exploring the rich cultural and historical layers of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s vibrant capital. This guided city tour offers a powerful contrast between the grandeur of Cambodia’s royal heritage and the sobering legacy of its recent past.

Your morning begins at the magnificent Royal Palace, one of Phnom Penh’s most iconic landmarks, majestically situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap Rivers. Built in 1866 by King Norodom, the complex still serves as the official residence of the King. Explore the ornate Coronation Hall, the Royal Dance Pavilion, and the Silver Pagoda, famed for its gleaming floor covered with over 5,000 pure silver tiles, each weighing one kilogram.

In the afternoon, your focus shifts to Cambodia’s turbulent 20th-century history. Begin at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), a former high school turned into a secret prison and torture center during the Khmer Rouge regime. The haunting photographs and testimonies presented here serve as a stark reminder of the atrocities committed under Pol Pot’s rule. Please be advised: the content is emotionally intense and may be distressing.

Next, a short drive brings you to Choeung Ek, also known as the Killing Fields, where more than 17,000 Cambodians were executed and buried in mass graves during the Khmer Rouge era. Though the pits have faded, a towering stupa filled with over 8,000 human skulls stands as a solemn and moving memorial to the victims.
